The Young Pioneers Part 3 Chapter Five

“Ah well, that’s another story my friend…’ Tobias had laughed, clambering up the embankment; “Come with me and, I’ll tell you more…”

Chapter Five

“I should have said ‘be careful’, perhaps…” Willington muttered with a grimace, as he had watched James Tulliver.

One minute the embittered spacer had been stepping from a large rock at the side of a stream, leading to a waterfall.

And then, he had been gone… James had not joined the older man, on the streams embankment; instead, he’d stepped forward and… found nothing.

“Where the frag am I?” James yelled into the inky blackness, as he floated aimlessly in the inky blackness.

Then he slowed his breath: glad that he was having difficulty doing so in his panic.

‘That was normal at least,’ he told himself, ‘even if the situation isn’t.’

It took time, but eventually James found that he could breathe evenly once more. And, although he was fearful, he’d held it at bay. That pleased him: “Further evidence that I’m alive…” James said, aloud.

Yet somehow, his statement of existence seemed hollow, as he floated weightless, amongst an inky blackness: and quite alone.

He couldn’t help but close his eyes, against the dark, his thoughts and a strong sense of self, gleamed from his upbringing.

Then, as James drifted, he told himself stories of his Nin, in the Old ‘Pool. It had been she who had brought him up after his parents’ death.

Their death had never been truly explained; yet his Nin lived in relative ease, to many living in Northern Cities in Britain, back on Old earth, in a society dominated by the corporations.

His Nin had taught James much that could be considered of a philosophical nature in his formative years and, her teachings helped him now, as he recalled her soft and comforting voice.

The one concept that she’d taught above all others was acceptance, of self and one’s surroundings. This acceptance allowed his to be… as he was… where he was… until.
